I am having a hard time reconciling this piece with my usual definitions of "Advertising":Advertising or "Humor":Wikipedia:Humor (the bad or dark kinds, take your pick), so I'm going to go with "Troll". Which is kind of unusual where it regards Ars.i

Precisely my view on all the noise being made by clueless "iPhone":iPhone newbies that don't know the first thing about what has been going on for the last six years or so on the mobile web.

So Nokia is world's biggest computer maker in 2008 guardar - +info

Part wishful thinking, part misguided comparisons to be taken with a sizable lump of salt, but reasonably correct in the base assumption that "Nokia":Nokia is very likely to ship more _computing devices_ than anyone else. But the figures are unverifiable (all we get is a summary table and no real sources), and the basic assumptions are wrong - _everything_ is a computer these days, and lumping smartphones with laptops is, in a word, stupid. What matters is not the underlying technology but _the context_ in which you use the device and the needs it satisfies. As such, I think we badly need a redefinition of the word "smartphone" for 2009, if only to avoid this kind of pseudo-analysis.

"Gruber":people/John_Gruber already "singled this out":http://daringfireball.net/linked/2009/01/22/chen-oblivious as clueless , but I'd like to add my Eur. 0.02 and point out that 1) of the 22.7 million "iPods":iPod mentioned, the vast majority is priced below US$149, so using US$400 as a reference is misleading - or just bad fact-checking - and 2) that the ABI Research report mentioned lumps _quite a few other things_ in those 200 milion (which are an outlying estimate until 2013) than just netbooks, _and_ that the 100% increase on the netbook market has no gross revenue figure increase forecasts associated with it - margins on those devices are shrinking fast, and are way below what "Apple":Apple considers a good internal target. But there isn't even any need to use "Apple's":Apple own arguments to debunk this kind of "reporting".

An utterly brilliant rant about the realities of "IT":IT, written in response to a piece on Slate that, in turn, ought to be turned into a reference text of why a "clueless reporter detector" (preferably one tied to a baseball bat) ought to be standard issue on any media outlet worth its salt. A lot of people have no idea of these realities but a few are so utterly clueless that the damage they can do by being so deserves to be singled out.
