"Fraser":people/Fraser_Speirs nails it, as far as I'm concerned - the bulk of the computing industry has spent so much time up its own navel rigging up baroquely obtuse self-perpetuating lists of features that it can't deal with making things _usable_. I'd add that that's one of the fundamental differences between mainstream computing and mobile - in the mobile world, companies spend a _lot_ of time considering how people will interact with the products and services (the results aren't always perfect, but at least we're long past the point where you just take a phone off the box and simply start using it...). Less, as always, is more. More work shaving off unnecessary bits, but also more in terms of usability.

Now here's something seriously worth looking into (even though the data comes from the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, the overall trends might apply to my neck of the woods). Oh, and it uses "Flash":Flash, but is probably the fifth thing in months of "ClickToFlash":apps/ClickToFlash usage that I've actually clicked on.

The title is a bit dramatic, but then "Charles Stross":people/Charles_Stross does have a penchant for laying it on thick. The whole piece is, as usual, thought-provoking and sure to create "interesting ripples":http://daringfireball.net/linked/2010/04/30/stross on the Internet throughout the weekend, but I agree with the main premise: the future is controlled now, and we're headed pretty much towards _that_ kind of future (I'm already "living portions of it now":site/Disclaimer).
