I, too, don't really get it. I had been quietly waiting to figure out the broader implications of this new "Marketing":Marketing approach (which actually seemed promising, if you "got" the need to have a non-geek approach), and now it all seems like a _non sequitur_. Maybe we're deep into "meta-controversy" territory now. Or maybe "Gruber":people/John_Gruber "is right in saying":http://daringfireball.net/linked/2008/09/17/msft-advertising the new tack is a mistake. Still, I think "it's too early to judge either way":http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/18/business/media/18adco.html?_r=1&ref=business&pagewanted=all, and I doubt they caved in to online pressure.

Best take yet on all the idiocy surrounding the upcoming laptop refresh and all the fanboy "hype":hype about why "Apple":Apple ought to be doing a netbook. I _have a netbook and I'm still not convinced_ it's a big enough market for "Apple":Apple to address. It will, however, _never_ be a market where "Apple":Apple will compete on price - like I've always written, in laptops they aim for the 10% of folk that can yield 90% of the revenue (and not just over a single purchase). And I don't buy into the $800 laptop being that "product transition" everyone's been talking about, either - margins would be impacted, sure, but most people who peddle that rumor didn't read the call transcripts or understand the context in which it was said.
