This is just sad. Of course, there are actually enlightened authors, editors and publishers out there who are quite likely to understand that they will sell _more_ e-books if they enable text-to-speech, and those will, in the fullness of time, take advantage of this to make the others look stingy and stupid.

Why indeed? I mean, I'm all for their having the same instinctive (and utterly wrong) gut reaction of trying to protect a failing business model instead of changing, but it isn't as if there aren't any alternatives to (over)use of "DRM":DRM, and even "Apple":Apple has already gone for simpler (and more customer-friendly) watermarking. Oh, and I'm _very_ glad I got the "PRS-505":Sony/Reader and can get all sorts of non-"DRM":DRM formats on it.
