This is just sad. Of course, there are actually enlightened authors, editors and publishers out there who are quite likely to understand that they will sell _more_ e-books if they enable text-to-speech, and those will, in the fullness of time, take advantage of this to make the others look stingy and stupid.

Why indeed? I mean, I'm all for their having the same instinctive (and utterly wrong) gut reaction of trying to protect a failing business model instead of changing, but it isn't as if there aren't any alternatives to (over)use of "DRM":DRM, and even "Apple":Apple has already gone for simpler (and more customer-friendly) watermarking. Oh, and I'm _very_ glad I got the "PRS-505":Sony/Reader and can get all sorts of non-"DRM":DRM formats on it.

Right on "cue":blog/2009/12/27/1108, a nice breakdown of the extent the publishing industry "trusts" the nascent "eBook":eBook_Readers channel.

Interesting. Of course, the real-life consequences (like the price of ebooks) are likely to take a couple of years to coalesce.

Interesting and thought-provoking, but I have a feeling things will turn out differently - it's too early to make definitive predictions, though.

_This_ is what I've been waiting for since e-books came about in earnest - although publishing houses are going to have a pretty hard time adjusting... Time to dust off our book draft.
