To 0.81%. A raging success if I ever saw one. Make of that figure (and its source) what you will.

These figures are going to be disputed by everyone with half an opinion (and I still think their "iPhone":iPhone stats were bunk, considering the amount of "Symbian":Symbian handsets), but the "Linux":Linux to "Mac":Mac ratio seems good.

Enough people have e-mailed me and bugged me about this that I feel I ought to say that _if you think this is a big thing, then you don't realize how crappy "US":US phones are on average._ Out there, the "iPhone":iPhone is the best thing since sliced bread _because there is no competition_, and things are a fair bit different in "Europe":Europe. Not that I don't expect "Apple":Apple to have good results over here - it's just that the market is so different that they are in no way likely to be this overwhelming. And besides, have you _ever_ tried to use a "RAZR":Motorola/RAZR?

From the department of pointless comparisons. For those of you who have trouble with figures, there is only one "iPhone":iPhone manufacturer and around half a dozen netbook manufacturers - "the list":http://www.displaysearch.com/cps/rde/xchg/displaysearch/hs.xsl/Strong_mini_note_shipments_buoy_notebook_PC_Market_Q3_08.asp can be summarized as "Acer":Acer (38.3%), "Asus":Asus (30.3%), "HP":HP (5.8%), "MSI":MSI (5.7%), "Dell":Dell (2.8%) and a few others. Now, last time I checked, anything divided by five or six is _smaller_ than the original, so those 5.6 million netbooks are a much smaller volume than the "iPhone":iPhone sales (_supposed to be_ 4.7m) when split. And I'm not even going to pick up the bit about "Apple":Apple "needing" to launch a netbook. Now, could we please have some better (i.e., apples to apples) reporting on netbook market growth, please?

BlackBerry Curve 83XX overtakes iPhone 3G in US smartphone rankings guardar - +info

I missed this one yesterday - and think it is the perfect example of why sales rankings aren't indicative of anything in particular. There are actually two counter-effects here: First off, the "US":US is a mobile microcosm - nothing that happens there has any relationship whatsoever to world trends (and this goes both for and against the "iPhone":iPhone, by the way), and second, the "83XX":Blackberry/8310 series is both one of the most popular business devices _ever_ and being heavily discounted due to the "8900":Blackberry/8900 (partially) taking its place. So yeah, grab a sack of salt whenever you read this kind of news, and think your way around it.

A very nice summary table, for as this year's figures start making the rounds, a lot of idiots are going to say 'oh, look, "Apple":Apple rose over 11% and "Nokia":Nokia is down 2%!" without actually going through the figures and checking that "Nokia":Nokia actually sold _three million more_ devices since last year (13 more than "Apple":Apple this year), and that the absolute figures still don't make "Apple":Apple anywhere near dominant in the smartphone market. "Android":Android, by the way, is on the far side of 2%... ("Gartner PR":http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1126812)
